guidelines for referees

Technical referees

Daphne Jackson Fellowships are normally hosted in university laboratories or industrial companies which undertake research and development. Each proposal comprises a technically challenging research project and a training programme of at least 100 hours in each year of the Fellowship.
The Daphne Jackson Trust has strict procedures in place to ensure that each candidate is worthy of being awarded a Fellowship and is likely to make a successful return to a SET career. Once the Fellowship coordinator is satisfied that the proposal is satisfactory then an independent technical referee is found to review the proposal. This is usually an independent expert in the area that the candidate will be working in who will comment on the scientific soundness of the project in the context of the field as well as the likelihood of someone with the candidate’s background making a success of the project. The referee will take into account that the candidate has had a career break and assess the training programme to ensure that it is appropriate and will give the candidate the correct skills and knowledge to complete the Fellowship satisfactorily.

Referees

The Daphne Jackson Trust also requires references from those who have known the candidate in a professional capacity. A copy of the guidelines for referees can be downloaded by clicking on the link below:
Guidelines for referees

Referees will be expected to comment on how long they have known the candidate and in what context. Also about the candidate’s abilities, skills and achievements, leadership and team working, how creative and responsible they are as well as their initiative, dedication and perseverance. The referee should include comments on the personal qualities of the candidate and how they would expect the candidate to make use of a Fellowship opportunity.
